Christmas concert in Miercurea Ciuc

“We are one big musical family” – said Elana at the concert this weekend, which was given by the Role band and the Superar Children’s Choir of Caritas Alba Iulia in the Saint Augustine Church in Miercurea Ciuc.

After months of preparation, on Friday, children and adults from three counties came together to create a miracle. I was part of this miracle, as I volunteered for two days to help the Superar Children’s Choir prepare for the big day. Rehearsals took place without any breaks for two days. Ninetyseven children, who live in difficult circumstances, practised with all their energy. It was an indescribable feeling to see their dedication, love, strength and will. The willpower to show themselves and the world that everyone is valuable, to go beyond stereotypes and prove to themselves that they are not just what society thinks they are. They can do anything if they work for it and love what they do. It is a fact that these children love what they do, if you look at their faces as they light up when their favourite song is coming up, the smiles on their faces when they notice that they play the ukulele correctly, the smile and pride their faces reflect when an adult smiles at them, and the overflowing happiness when a church full of people stand up to applaud them after the performance. Unspeakable.

For two days I watched the excitement on their faces before every rehearsal, before every song, before the performance. And then the happiness and the will after every little success, applause, praise and good word. I think these children deserve, after all the sacrifice and work, to be given a standing ovation.

I am grateful for being part of their happiness, that I could give them a smile, good words and kindness in this cold world. This weekend, although physically exhausting, filled my heart and brought me the magic of Christmas.
